BMHS Honors First Regional Championship Team

We continued our celebration of Bomber Sports with another introduction of some of the Bombers Best on February 17, 2024.  We welcomed back the very first team to ever win a regional championship in any sport – the 1986 Lady Bombers Track Team.   The rafters at the east end of the Green Palace now display a banner to honor this special team.

While we do not have accurate records of the regional tournament results that year, it is interesting to note that this incredible team won the region without having a single individual win any single event.  We do know that there were several athletes that placed at the state that year, including  Michelle Ray, placing 4th in 100m hurdles and 5th in 300m hurdles, Maria Pritchard placing 3rd in the 100m dash, 3rd in 200m dash and 2nd in 400m dash; and Deanna Houston placed 3rd in High Jump.  The 4x400 team placed 4th in the state that year.

That was a golden era for track at BMHS.  The boys and girls teams had some incredible underclassmen.  In the next two years members of that team won 8 regional championships

Michelle Ray won the 100 meter hurdles in 1987 and the Long Jump in 1988.  Alvantis McCauley won the 100 M dash in 1988.  Doug Roberts won the 100M hurdles, the 300 M hurdles AND the Long Jump in 1987.  Sparky Robinson won the Discus regional championship in 1987 and 1988.  And, achieving even more, Michelle Ray won the 1987 state championship in the 100M hurdles and the 1988 state championship in the Long Jump.

Joining us that night were some of the members of this special 1986 Region Champion Girls Track Team and some of those regional champion male athletes that were a part of this incredible era in Ballard Memorial Track.

These Lady Bombers, however, were the All A First Region Champions, winning 5 matches in a day without losing a single set – gaining 5 perfect 2-0 wins on the day.  At the All A State Tournament in Richmond, the Lady Bombers advanced through pool play with three 2-0 wins to qualify as one of the state’s Final Four.  In the state semi-finals, the BMHS ladies fell to a St. Henry squad that eventually won the All A and the KHSAA state championships.  The 2021 Lady Bombers finished with an incredible 32-6 record.

Bombers Best Honored - 1982 Regional Runners-up

BMHS celebrated the 40th anniversary of the best year in Bomber Sports on December 2, 2022 in the season opening home doubleheader for the basketball teams.  In 1982 the Lady Bombers Basketball Team, the Bombers Basketball Team, and the Bombers Baseball team all won their district tournaments and each ended up as First Region Runners-up.  Members of these teams were invited back, and those present were honored on the floor at different times during the evening.

Frank Haneline was the head coach, and Connie Lamkin was the assistant coach for the Lady Bombers, who are only one of two teams to ever advance to the regional finals. They accumulated a 23-6 record, winning the 2nd district title over Lone Oak by a score of 47-42, falling in the regional finals to the eventual state champion Marshall County Lady Marshals.  That team included two members of the school’s 1000 point club – Trina Leigh Middleton and Kim Riepe Farmer.  Members of the team included:  Kelly Evans, Deanna Gordon (Shelley), Debbie Kendrick (Buchanan), Karen Lamkin, Trina Leigh (Middleton), Sam Mitchell, Denise Redpath, Marla Renfrow (Cooper), Kim Riepe (Farmer), Jonna Vaden, Tracy Walters, and Mary Wood.

The 1982 Bomber Baseball Team accumulated a 20-3 record that spring.  They earned the district championship by defeating Carlisle County behind a no-hitter thrown by Roy Dunning.  That team advanced to the regional finals, eventually falling to the Paducah Tilghman Tornado.  That team included catcher Todd Cooper, who later played for the University of Louisville, and shortstop Tracy Thomason, who later played for the University of Kentucky.  Members of the 1982 Bomber District Champion and First Region Runner-up Baseball Team were:  Tim Alvey, Jeff Berry, Russ Buchanan, Todd Cooper, Brad Davis, Kreg Denton, Roy Dunning, Alan Foster, Joe Hannan, Marty Logsdon, Jeff Norment, Robbie Pace, Kevin Spraggs, Tracy Thomason, and Mike Williams. The assistant coach was Tom Shelton.  The head coach was Mike Sidbotton.

The 1982 Bombers Boys Basketball team accumulated a record of 23-10 that season.  After winning the district championship in 1981, the team’s reputation grew, and they were invited to and played in the first prestigious King of the Bluegrass Tournament, where they fell to the state’s top team, Virgie, and Mr. Basketball Todd May.  Behind the three-time All-Purchase Player and 1981 Purchase Player of the Year as well as the school’s all-time leading scorer, Keith Myers, the team defeated Paducah Tilghman 63-60 to win the 2nd District championship.  The First Region tournament was one of the most exciting tournaments in memory, and the Bombers eventually ran into the Tornado again the finals where they fell short, ending their season as Region Runners up.

Members of the 1982 Bomber District Champion and First Region Runner-up Basketball Team were:  Barry Babb, Todd Beardsley, Jeff Brewington, Russ Buchanan, Roy Dunning, Darren Jennings, Greg Mitchell, Keith Myers, Mike Phillips, Flint Renfrow, Barry Stevens, and Jim Taffer.  Yogi Trice was the assistant coach, and the head coach was B.B. Kendrick, who passed away this past March.  The team invited B.B.'s widow, Kathy, to the floor and presented her with a signed ball and gift in appreciation for the investment of she and Coach Kendrick in their lives.
